About Joseph Frederich Weitzel

Obituary: St. Cloud Times, St Cloud, Minnesota, 21 June 1939

Joseph Weitzel, Sr., of Melrose, a pioneer of Stearns county, died here early today at the age of 83 years. He was born in New Bedford, Indiana, and came to Stearns county at an early age with his parents, who settled at Albany. Although the family was driven off by the Indians they returned and established themselves in the county, where Mr. Weitzel lived the remainder of his life.

Mrs. Weitzel died nine years ago. Surviving children are Mrs. Ida Diederich, Mrs. James Crossen, Winnipeg; Mrs. Anna Haverson, Minneapolis, Mrs. [sic] Robert Weitzel, St. Cloud; Mrs. Martin Loso, St. Joseph; Roman of Melrose; Mrs. Jacob Goering, St. Cloud; and Joseph, Flint, Mich. There are 27 grandchildren. Mr. Weitzel was the last of his family alive.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at Melrose, according to present arrangements.

Obituary: Albany Enterprise, Albany, Minnesota, 29 June 1939

The death of Joseph Weitzel, prominent and highly respected citizen of Melrose and former resident of Albany for many years, occurred at the St. Cloud Hospital at one o'clock Wednesday morning, June 21st. He had been at the hospital since Sunday suffering from complications. Previously he had been ill with a heart ailment.

The funeral was held at the St. Boniface church in Melrose Saturday morning at 9 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Father L. J. Haupt officiating.

Joseph Weitzel was born at Fort F-sis, Indiana, on May 24, 1856, and at his death was 83 years of age. His family moved to Albany when he was 7 years old. He grew to manhood here and was a graduate of the St. John's University. On June 28, 1876, he married Barbara Auer at Albany and they lived here until 1901 when they moved to Melrose and lived there since. Mrs. Weitzel died April 26, 1930.

Mr. Weitzel was employed with the Great Northern at the roundhouse and shops until 1922. He was a member of the St. Joseph Society.

The children surviving are: Mrs. Henry Diederich of Winnipeg, Canada; Mrs. Gust Haverson of Minneapolis; Mrs. James Crossen of Winnipeg; Robert of St. Cloud; Mrs. Martin Loso of St. Joseph; Roman of Melrose; Mrs. Jacob Goering of St. Cloud and Joseph of Flint, Mich. There are 30 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
