About Joseph Leech Whitehead
Joseph L. “Joe” Whitehead was born on October 9, 1887, in Union, Dunklin, Missouri. He married Della Driver, daughter of Gabriel Allen Driver and Nancy Edens, about 1910. Della was born on September 22, 1892. When she married Joseph, she already had a daughter named Thelma. Joseph and Della had children Mae Kathleen (1913), Joseph Homer (1916-1965) and Vernon Whitehead (1918). Della died on March 22, 1920, and was buried in Gum Cemetery, in Naylor, Ripley, Missouri. After her death, her daughter was raised by her parents. Della's tombstone inscription reads 'Loving memory; A place is vacant in our hearts, that never can be filled.' Joseph later married a woman named Zetta Mae Wilson, daughter of Frank Wilson and Emma. Zetta was born on October 5, 1889, in Poplar Bluff, Butler, Missouri. Joseph and Zetta had children named Ralph L. (1922-1978), Alfred (1925), Raymond (1927) and a son named Leonard Calvin Whitehead (1929-1929) who only lived one week. In 1930, Joseph and Zetta lived in Varner, Ripley County, with the three oldest boys and the two boys from his previous marriage. Joseph was a farmer. Joseph died on February 8, 1956, in Bernie, Stoddard, Missouri, as a result of a brain hemmorhage. He was buried in Bernie Cemetery in Bernie. His tombstone inscription reads 'Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.' Zetta died on May 1, 1978, in Campbell, Dunklin County, and was buried in Bernie Cemetery.
