Prof. Joseph Winter Dead: Superintendent of German Free Schools Was a Noted Educator. Professor Joseph Winter, a noted German educator and Superintendent of the German Free Schools in the United States, died yesterday at his home, 113 East Eighty-third Street, in his sixtieth year. He was born in Vienna and until he came to this country in 1889 was a member of the faculty of the university of that city. Professor Winter was at one time city editor of the Staats-Zeitung and also was editor of the German edition of Harper's Weekly. He was a former President of the German Social and Science Society of this city and had been a lecturer at Harvard, Yale, and Cornell on the German literature and language. Both Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler of Columbia and Dr. Arthur T. Hadley of Yale had praised his books on educational topics. Professor Winter was a member of the Republican Club and a number of German societies. His widow and three sons survive him.
