About Joseph Woodford, I

Joseph Woodford, I married in 1663 Rebecca Newell, daughter of Thomas Newell and Rebecca Olmstead. Joseph Woodford wrote his will on 10 December 1701 and it was probated on 25 October 1710.

The Newell house stood facing North Meadow Lane, now Farmington Ave; The Woodford house faced on Waterville Road. Joseph Woodford and Rebeckah Newell were next door neighbors. The marriage of Rebeckah Newell and Joseph Woodford began a line of several generations of family members who lived in the Newell-Woodford house at what came to be called Newell Corners. In 1706, Joseph and Rebeckah sold their property to Rebeckah's brother, Samuel Newell, and moved to Avon and to Northfield, Massachusetts.

Children:

  • Esther 1668-1742
  • Mary 1669-1723
  • Sarah 1673-1750
  • Rebeckah 1675-
  • Joseph II 1676-1760
  • Hannah 1679-1757
  • Elizabeth 1681
  • Susannah 1682
  • Abigail 1685-1736

Parents: Thomas Woodford "The Emigrant" b 1610 Roxbury, England; and Mary Blott b 1609 d 1659, buried with their daughter Mary Woodford Sheldon and son-in-law Isaac Sheldon in Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Connecticut.

Note: There are some who disagree with Thomas and Mary being Joseph the 1st's parents. This may well be, so take that piece of information into consideration when you do your genealogy. Because this information and connection was given to me from a reliable genealogy sorce I don't want to dis-connect them until more research is done.

I, also, have Joseph I birth date as 1645 not 1632. Another thing to "check" out.

I have copied the info. below from Mary Blott's FAG page........ A Find A Grave visitor named Alice agrees: I have researched Thomas Woodford and Mary Blott extensively and have seen some sources that list Joseph as their son but I believe this is in error. They only had the three daughter evidenced by the fact that Thomas's will gives everything to his three daughters. He would not do this if he had a son. Secondly, Joseph was born two years before the Woodfords were married.

He married Rebecca Newell, daughter of Thomas Newell and Rebecca Olmstead. He wrote his will on 10 December 1701 and it was probated on 25 October 1710. (Death date was probably around Nov 6, 1710 per Brooke Harlowe)

In 1706, Joseph and Rebeckah sold their property to Rebeckah's brother, Samuel Newell, and moved to Avon and to Northfield, MA.

PARENTS OF JOSEPH WOOFORD: Thomas Woodford "the emigrant" b 1610 Roxbury, England Mary Blott b Dec 24, 1609 in England d Jan 10, 1660 Northampton, Hampshire Co., Mass. (It is believed that Thomas and Mary Blott Woodford were buried in Bridge St. Cem., Northampton, Hampshire Co., Mass. This is where their daughter Mary Woodford Sheldon and son-in-law Isaac Sheldon are buried. See Thomas and Mary Blott Woodford's Find a Grave memorial to see more information on this.

From Roxbury Church Records: Mary Blott came to America with her parents. Mary Blott a maid servant, came in 1632, and married Steward (Thomas) of this Church. She lived a Christian sort. She married Thomas Woodford on March 4, 1635. The couple had four daughters, Mary, Hannah, Thankful, and Sarah, and two sons, Nehemiah, and Joseph. She died at age 51, predeceasing her Father in Northampton, or Boston, Mass. Jan 10, 1660. Her will proved March 27, 1662.

Received on 3/30/16, from Find A Grave contributor, Fabricjunkie, the following information regarding Joseph's death date.

His memorial indicates that he died 10 Dec 1710. There is a note in the memorial that a Brooke Harlowe thinks he was born closer to 6 Nov 1710. But I have a very different take on his death. His will was probated on 25 Oct 17110, if the note is correct. As a matter of law, no will is or can be probated until the author has died. He could not possibly have died in November or December after the probate hearing. Depending in the size of his estate and the length of time it took for the estate to be accounted for, debts collected, debts paid, etc., Joseph could have died as early as 11 Dec 1701 (the day after the date on his will) up until 24 October 1710 (the day before the probate date but extremely unlikely). Interesting side note - 25 October 1710 was a Saturday
