About Joseph Jacob Wysocki
Joseph Jacob Wysocki was born July 02, 1858 in Czapiewice, Brusy Parish, Poland to Paul Wysocki and Constantina Majkowska.
Joseph came to the United States in about 1877 at the age of 19, as a stowaway on a cattle boat.
When John Czapiewski was 18 (1874) years old, he began working on the railroad between Fargo and Valley City, ND. When he was 22 years old, he heard about the rich land northwest of Grand Forks. In 1879, Joseph Wysocki, Michael Merchlewicz and he walked all the way from Fargo and filed on a homestead, four miles southeast of Minto
Joseph made his way to Walsh County, Dakota Territory where he filed for naturalization on Sep, 10, 1880, in Grand Forks, County, but arrived too later to be on the 1880 Census in Dakota Territory.
At the time of his arrival Joseph two half brothers were living in Walsh Couinty John Lizakowski, who was a step brother to Frank Lizakowski. John and Frank Lizakowski had the same father, but different mothers. John Lizakowski and Joseph Wysocki shared the same mother.
Joseph proved a farmstead five miles south of Warsaw. To prove the land he had to live on it for one month each year, for two years in succession. Each of the two years, he walked to Minto, ND, from Warsaw to catch the train to British Columbia where he worked on the railroad through the mountains.
The second year Frank Bruski of Warsaw went along. At that time railroad cars were held together by steel pins and holes to match. Many men were killed between the cars. Bruski took much kidding when he whittled at night on a block of wood forming a model to be railroad sent an engineer to see this model and soon all railroads used his idea. He was not paid for this.
Wysocki then broke the prairie with one ox. From this start he bought a horse. By the time the railroad was put through Walsh County, he sold horses to Jim Hill personally.
On November 25, 1884 Joseph married Augusta Maszk, the daughter of Andrew and Ludwiga Maszk. Augusta was born in Winona, MN, and spent many hours around Sugar Loaf Mountain. She helped herd cattle on the road when the family moved to the Warsaw area.
She was born Dec, 1865 in Winona, Winona County, Minnesota, and died 1948.
When Joseph was working in his field, two young men came walking across the prairie looking for a place to establish a business. Robert Szczys and John Sprafka started their stores in Minto upon the recommendation of Wysocki. Both men were successful and raised their families in Minto. In 1910 he bought land three miles southwest of Minto and farmed that until lie retired in 1920. Much of the farm land was cleared of large trees. The Forest River runs through this land. A hand painted wooden plate, with the Wysocki crest, was sent to the family from Poland. It consists of a ring of oak leaves and acorns around a shield of gold, white and red cornerwise bands. Over these hands is a (love of peace holding a flag of two pennants, one white and one red: a crown; a black circle enclosing a red background with a silver moon and a star.
Joseph immigrated in 1881 and naturalized in 1895. In 1900 he was 44 years old, married for 16 years, with 6 children, he owned a farm in Ardoch Township, Walsh County, ND. By 1910 he and Augusta had 7 children living at home still living in Ardoch Township on the farm. In 1920 they had moved to Minto City, Walsh County, ND. In 1930 Joe had retired, still living in Minto City, with only one child at home. Joe lived to be 89 years old.
