ZARANKA, Joseph A. Joseph A. Zaranka, 83, a resident of Bloomfield for over 40 years, died late Sunday evening, (September 21, 2008), at St. Francis Hospital. He was born in Nanticoke, PA, a son of the late Anthony and Eva (Tamulis) Zaranka and brother of the late Anthony Zaranka who died in 2005. Joseph earned his B.S. degree from the Teachers College of Connecticut Class of 1952 and his law degree from Western New England College in Springfield, MA Class of 1962. He was employed for many years as an adjuster for the A. E. Oberhaus Company Inc., of Hartford and Continental Insurance Company in the claims department. Joe was a veteran of World War II serving as a Corporal with the United States Marine Corps and participated in action in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall and Pelelieu Islands and Okinawa. He was the recipient of several awards and citations during his service to his country. Joe received his honorable discharge from the Marines in December of 1945 and later reenlisted with the United States Air Force serving during the Korean War until April of 1953. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Bloomfield, and held memberships with the Windsor Lodge of Elks #2060, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, Council 26 of Windsor Locks, and was an active member and former National Director of the Air Force Association for 13 years and later was honored as a Director Emeritus. Joe was the husband of the late Shirley Anne (Miller) Zaranka who died in 1974 and leaves his two sisters, Albina A. Ledwith and her husband Philip of Hartford, and Regina Z. Jackmauh and her husband Anthony of East Windsor, two nieces, Linda Ledwith and Donna Jackmauh, three nephews, Philip Ledwith and his wife Kathleen and their children, Kelly, Kristy and Philip Max Ledwith, John Jackmauh, and Alan Jackmauh and his wife Cynthia and their son Alan. His funeral will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 8:45 a.m. from the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 805 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., with Rites of Committal and Military Honors to conclude at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, both in Bloomfield.
