Joseph Zinger

Joseph Singer (24 August 1923-12 November 2009) was a professor of aeronautics and former Technion President. Israel Prize laureate in the field of engineering and technology for 2000.

Singer was born in Vienna, Austria to a Zionist family of Polish descent. In 1933 he immigrated to Eretz Israel, and with his brother Michael, studied in the "Re'ali" high school in Haifa. During his high-school years he was active in the paramilitary youth organisation Gadna and in the Jewish underground organisation the "Hagana", under the command of Chaim Laskov (a future Air Force commander and Chief of Staff of the IDF). In 1941 he was was among the first in the country with a pilot license, received during his aeronautical engineering studies conducted by correspondence with the Royal Society of British Aviation. He was enlisted to the British Army in the late stages of World War II, but his request to serve a fighter pilot in the RAF was denied and he served as an aircraft mechanic in the RAF in Egypt. Following his release from the army in 1946, he moved to England and studied aircraft engineering at the University of London and graduated with honors. He returned to Israel in 1949 and joined the Israeli Air Force.

In the Air Force he was active in converting airplanes to fighter planes and was among the founders of the engineering department of the Air Force and was sent on its behalf to study for a master's degree in aeronautical engineering at the New York Polytechnic Institute (1952-1953). He completed six years of service in the Air Force, and was released with full honours at the rank of Major, but over the years remained a consultant to the Air Force, the Navy and "Rafael". In 1957 he completed a doctorate in aeronautical engineering at the New York Polytechnic Institute under the supervision of Professor Nicholas Hoff. In 1955 he joined the Technion as a faculty member in the Faculty of Aeronautical Engineering. In 1961 was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and later - Professor. Zinger served twice as Dean of the Faculty (1958-1960, 1965-1967).

From the beginning of his days in the faculty he was in charge of the program of aircraft structure. He established and headed the laboratory studying the collapse of thin-walled structures, where world-class experiments were conducted to examine the theories in the field. His research in this lab focused on the behavior of missiles, airplanes, submarines, and heavy machinery. His research was funded by the U.S. Air Force and was part of the experiments that preceded the Apollo space program and the Saturn 5 rocket production.

In 1971-1973, Zinger served as head of the Engineering Department and VP of the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and led the IAI in the early preparatory stages for the design and initial production stages of the "Arava" light cargo plane, the "Westwind" small luxury jet and the "Kfir" fighter jet.

In 1982-1986 Zinger served as President of the Technion. He was later appointed chairman of the board of IAI (1986-1987). Among his other public roles over the years: he was one of the founders of the Israel Aviation Association (1951), he served as member of the Advisory Committee of the Chief Scientist in the Ministry of Defence (1968-1976), member of the Council for Higher Education (1975-1981), member of the Committee on Space Infrastructure at the Ministry of Science. in 1970, 1971 and 1979 he was member of the Israel Defense Prize Committee. in 1982 and 1986 he served as president of the International Council of Aviation Sciences.
