Josephine Mattern

Josephine Mattern, 90, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, who died Friday, January 16, 2015. Burial will be in the spring in Little Flower Catholic Cemetery in Rugby, North Dakota.

Josephine was born December 9, 1924 in Karlsruhe, North Dakota, a daughter of Rochus & Regina (Schwab) Senger.

On February 5, 1945 she married Christian (Chris) Mattern in Karlsruhe, North Dakota.

They owned and operated a farm outside of Deering, North Dakota until 1966. They then moved to Renton, Washington, where they purchased and operated a tavern. She also worked at Valley General Hospital there until retiring in 1988. They moved to Idaho for a few years, and then moved to Rugby, North Dakota in 1994. In 2010, she moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to be closer to her children.

She is survived by her children: Gary Mattern, Rocklin, California; Marlene Poiter, Harrison, Idaho; James Mattern, Coos Bay, Oregon; Patricia Steen, Cheney, Washington; Dean Mattern, Auburn, Washington; Cheryl Lackey, Post Falls, Idaho; Joe Mattern, Roundup, Montana; Jack Mattern, Tucson, Arizona; Sheila Landwehr, Edmonds, Washington; Kimberly Ballou, Spokane, Washington; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Leo, Edward and Peter; sisters, Christine, Katherine, Monica, Rosemary and Regina.
