A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

קריירה מוזיקלית את שיעורי הכינור החל כבר בגיל ארבע, לאחר שאמו גילתה כי הוא אוסף חוטי גומי מרחבי הבית ומותח אותם בין ידיות שידתו, כדי להפיק צלילים שאותם נגנה אמו בפסנתר. כילד למד אצל ג'וזף גינגולד, כנר ומורה למוזיקה מפורסם שלימד בבית הספר למוזיקה של אוניברסיטת אינדיאנה. בגיל 12 הופיע כסולן בהופעת תזמורת פילדלפיה בניצוחו של ריקרדו מוטי. את לימודי התיכון סיים שנתיים לפני בני גילו.

ב-1985 ערך את הופעת הבכורה שלו בקרנגי הול יחד עם תזמורת סנט לואיס, ומאז הופיע יחד עם רבות מהתזמורות הנחשבות בעולם. ב-2000 זכה בפרס גראמי על ביצוע יצירת סולו לכינור, יצירה מקורית שנכתבה עבורו על ידי המלחין ניקולס מאו אותה ביצע בניצוחו של רוג'ר נורינגטון. בל היה מועמד פעמים נוספות לפרס גראמי על ביצוע יצירות של ג'ורג' גרשווין מפורגי ובס, של ליאונרד ברנשטיין ועל האלבום המשותף שהקליט עם נגני המנדולינה בסגנון הבלוגראס, סאם בוש ומייק מרשל.

בל ביצע את קטע הסולו בפסקול זוכה פרס אוסקר, של סרט הקולנוע "הכינור האדום", שיצא לאקרנים ב-1998. ב-2009 חבר למלחין הסרטים לביצוע קטעי הסולו עבור פסקול הסרט מלאכים ושדים. השיר "Before My Time" שביצע עם סקרלט ג'והנסון היה מועמד לפרס אוסקר בקטגוריית השיר המקורי הטוב ביותר ב-2013.

מאז 2004 בל הוא שותף אמנותי של תזמורת סיינט פול ומכהן כפרופסור אורח באקדמיה המלכותית למוזיקה בלונדון. ב-2007 זכה בפרס אברי פישר היוקרתי הניתן למוזיקאים קלאסיים אמריקאיים עבור הישגים יוצאי דופן. החל מסתיו 2008 מכהן כמרצה בכיר בסגל בית הספר למוזיקה של אוניברסיטת אינדיאנה. במאי 2011 נקבע כמנהל מוזיקלי של האקדמיה של סנט מרטין בשדות.

כלי הנגינה של בל הוא כינור סטרדיוואריוס המכונה "Gibson ex Huberman". הכינור ששימש בעבר את הכנר ברוניסלב הוברמן, יוצר ב-1713, עיצומה של "תקופת הזהב" של אנטוניו סטרדיווארי. בל רכש אותו בסכום של קרוב ל-4 מיליון דולר אמריקאי, כשלצורך הרכישה מכר את כינורו הקודם, סטרדיוואריוס המכונה "Tom Taylor". אלבומו הראשון שהוקלט עם הכינור החדש, Romance of the Violin, נמכר במעל 5 מיליון עותקים.

בתחילת 2007 נרתם בל לניסוי שערך עיתונאי הוושינגטון פוסט ג'ין ויינגרטן. בל התנדב ללבוש בגדי רחוב וכובע מצחיה מסווה, להופיע כנגן רחוב בשעת עומס בתחנת הרכבת התחתית של וושינגטון, כשהוא מנגן יצירות מופת בכינורו. במהלך הניסוי בן 43 הדקות, שתועד במצלמה נסתרת, חלפו על פני בל 1,097 עוברי אורח. רק שבעה מהם עצרו להאזין לנגינתו ורק אישה אחת זיהתה אותו. בל הצליח לאסוף במהלך הניסוי 32.17 דולרים (לא כולל שטר של 20 דולר שניתן לו על ידי האישה שזיהתה אותו). על תיאור הניסוי זכה ויינגרטן בפרס פוליצר לכתבה עיתונאית[3].
