About Joshua Winsor
Joshua Winsor came to America between 1620 and 1631. He was indentured to Gov Winthrop. Roger Williams asked for Winsor's indenture in payment of a debt owed to Williams by Winthrop. Thus Winsor came to Rhode Island. Later, Joshua's son Samuel married Roger's daughter, Mercy.
Joshua Windsor dropped the "d" from his name when he came to America. For his passage from England, Joshua became an indentured servant to Gov John Winthrop in Boston. He was a freethinker and so had difficulties with the Puritan theocracy there. Roger Williams, founder of RI, in need of help handling his property, sent a letter (a record of which still exists) to Gov Winthrop asking to have the indentured Joshua in satisfaction of a debt owed him. Joshua came to Providence in 1638. According to Olney Winsor, Joshua was "a person of some considerable talents and education, and of a serious and religious turn of mind." He was married around 1643. His wife died in 1654.
Information on Joshua Winsor's ancestry is from Horace Field Parshall's book "the Parshall Family, A.D. 870--1915; a collection of historical records and notes..." (London, F Edwards, 1915).
All above information is from the "Jewell Register" extension, compiled by Robert Winsor Jewell of New York state in 2004.
