Memories: 1 On 7 May 2011 Jessica Wrenn wrote:

Josiah Cleaveland* (1690-1750), according to the Cleveland/Cleaveland genealogy: "was a man of wealth and of prominence in both town and church at Canterbury". Josiah was taxed in 1716 at Canterbury, and chosen 4th. Selectman in 1718. He acquired large land holdings and participated in the formation of a new, separatist Church along with his brother-in-law Solomon Paine, a follower of Rev. George Whitefield (Calvinistic-Methodist).

This new Church was at odds with the established Church at Canterbury (Congregational) over theological matters sufficiently serious that two of his sons, Ebenezer and John, were temporarily expelled from Yale College for attending its services.

One of Josiah's grandsons, Moses Cleaveland, was the founder of Cleveland, Ohio.
