About Joyce Ruth Whitehead

Joyce Ruth Whitehead (nee Armstrong) August 20, 1929 - November 23, 2007 Joyce died peacefully with family by her side at the age of 78. She is survived by Bert, her husband of 58 years, her children; Sam (Sue), Jake (Lee), Cathy, Janet, Herb, her grandchildren; Sally, Eric, Caia (Trevor), Kyle, Shane and Ciara and siblings; Ron, Carol, Denny and Larry. Joyce was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2002 and lived with the disease as she had with all other challenges in her life, with dignity, grace and an abundance of humour. Joyce was the 5th of Albert and Emily Armstrong's 9 children and a long time Burnaby resident. She grew up on Capital Hill with her family, moving to Cariboo Road in 1949 when she married Bert. In 1967, Bert and Joyce moved to their much loved summer spot; Boundary Bay. Once Bert retired in the 1980's, they moved to Saturna Island. Bert and Joyce built all 3 homes that they lived in. Joyce was committed to raising their family and making her community a better place to live. She spent countless hours involved with schools, swim clubs, politics, Delta Potters' Association and the Gulf Island Ferry Advisory Committee. Whenever Joyce took up a cause, she was a force to be reckoned with. Joyce was a fabulous gardener, great cook and an accomplished potter. She loved to travel, spending many a happy hour on an obscure beach with her husband and long time friends Bill and June Lewarne and Vic and Fran Stusiak or exploring far off places with Jake, Lee, Rip and Frankie. Joyce was equally at home with bargaining for pearls on a Malaysian beach as she was shucking oysters off the back of their boat the ""Headstrong"". She had a keen sense of adventure, which all of her children and grandchildren share. Special thanks to Dr. Janice Kirkpatrick, Dr.Christine Gemeinhardt, staff at Kinsmen Retirement Centre and her amazing companions Ruth, Sharleen, Wendy and Cindy who helped Mom live out her final days with independence and dignity. Joyce loved her flowers, so treat yourself to a big bouquet in her honour or donate to the Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorder Clinic: VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. A celebration of her life and her life with Bert will take place on December 7 at 1:00 p.m. at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts; 6450 Deer Lake Ave, Burnaby.
