About Judge Nicholas Ridgely

Birth: Feb. 12, 1693 Anne Arundel County Maryland, USA Death: Feb. 16, 1755 Dover Kent County Delaware, USA

Col Nicholas Greenberry Ridgely was born on 12 February 1693 in Wardridge, Maryland, to Capt Henry Ridgely III and his wife, Katherine Greenberry. His father died when he was six years old and his mother was remarried to Capt John Hammond Jr. He was orphaned at ten years old when his mother died.

At the age of eighteen, Col Ridgely inherited some of his father's land: 275 acres of "My Quarter Plantation" at the head of Broad Creek and 272 acres of "Ridgely's Lot" on the northeast side of the great branch of the Patuxent River. He served as an associate justice for the counties of New Castle, Kent, and Sussex, in Delaware.

Col Ridgely married first Sarah Worthington, 26 December 1711, in St Margaret's Parish, Maryland. They had five daughters, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Ruth, and Ann. He was widowed when his wife died in 1721. He married second Anne French, the widow of James Gordon, 5 December 1723, but was widowed once again when she died in 1733. His third marriage was on 23 December 1736 to Mary Middleton, the widow of Benjamin Vining.

Col Ridgely died, 16 February 1755, at Eden Hill in Dover, Maryland. His remains were possibly buried on the Ridgley family plantation.
