Judy Freund was born in Alsfeld, Germany, where her father owned a large clothing factory. After Hitler assumed power, a Nazi shot into the Steinberger home and a former classmate of her father extorted money from her mother. These events helped the family decide to emigrate to British Mandate Palestine in 1933. In Haifa, Judy attended a premier private school, Bet Sefer Reali. In 1946 she left for Vevey, Switzerland, to study photography. Three years later she came to the U.S., stayed with the family of her cousin, William Freund, and in 1951 they were married. Judy had a keen interest in music and in biblical archaeology. She was well read in biblical literature and history, and was involved with the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies, and the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry. She was proficient in English, German, Hebrew, French, and Swiss-German. She was an active member of several literature discussion groups in Florida and New Jersey, and participated in the Brandeis University's National Women's Committee. She was an active member of the Summit Jewish Community Center for over 40 years.
