About Judith Lynn Sammons-Smith

JUDITH LYNN SHERARD-SMITH Judith passed away peacefully on March 7, 2007 at the age of 56. She was a longtime resident of Alameda and loved the town. Judith was predeceased by her father, Thurman Sherard and her brother, Dean Sherard. She leaves a loving husband, Melvin Smith of Alameda; a loving mother, Helen Sherard of Walnut Creek; two sisters, Susan Sherard of phoenix, AZ and Janice Legler of Cheyenne, WY; an aunt, Lou Estes; a niece, Delana Legler; a nephew, Michael Legler and his family; plus other relatives and friends. Judith was especially close to her adoring niece, Deanna Difuntorum of Phoenix, AZ. Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Judith also lived in Juneau, Alaska and Santiago, Chile before moving to the Bay Area in 1964. She attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, graduating with a double major in Sociology and Photo Journalism. Judith parleyed her love of photography and her facility with words into a stint as a newspaper reporter with the Tri-Valley News organization where she covered the police beat and area politics. A series of administrative and professional jobs led Judith to her career as a legal secretary for two San Francisco law firms, first for Berman Berkeley and Lasky and most recently for Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott. Besides photography, Judith loved cats and dogs and the family cabin in the Big Horn Mountains of her home state. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 16, 2:00 p.m. at the Greer Family Mortuary, 2694 Blanding Avenue, Alameda. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in Judith's name to the American Cancer Society. Published in East Bay Times from Mar. 12 to Mar. 14, 2007
