About Judith of Friuli

This Judith di Friuli (838-870) is NOT the same Judith known as Judith im Sülichgau (888-bef 935) who married Arnulf of Bavaria (Herzog von Bayern).

According to the Medieval Lands database, any husband of this Judith is unknown. According to Peter Stewart (medieval historian), she was married to East Frankish Count Heinrich, margrave in Frisia (born 830, killed in battle near Paris 20 August 886) This appears to be Heinrich of Babenberg, 825-886, who seems to be linked to a daughter of Eberhard and Gisela, though which one is uncertain (read the notes on his profile)--many scholars believe it to have been Ingeltrude. She is also often reported to have been married as an early wife of Duke Conrad II of Auxerre, 825-876 (see below), who would have been 13 years her senior, making a marriage before about 856 unlikely. Was she the mother of his children? Charles Cawley of the Medieval Lands Database only affirms Waldrada of Worms as his wife and mother of his children (see http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/BURGUNDY%20KINGS.htm).

Medieval Lands database: JUDITH (-after [874]). The Historia Ecclesiæ Cisoniensis records the testament of “Evrardus comes cum coniuge mea Gisla”, which bequeathes property to “filiabus…nostris…Judith…[in] Balgingam et cortem nostrum in pago Moila…Helisheim…”[308]. "Gisle" donated property to Cysoing for the anniversaries of "Ludovico imperatore patre meo et…Judith imperatrice matre mea et…rege Karolo…germano et…prole mea…Hengeltrude, Hunroc, Berengario, Adelardo, Rodulpho, Hellwich, Gilla, Judith" by charter dated to [874].

Regarding Conrad II of Auxerre. English Wikipedia says:

Conrad II, Duke of Transjurane Burgundy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conrad II the Younger was the Count of Auxerre from 864 until his death in 876. He was a son of Conrad I of Auxerre, and Adelaide of Tours; an older brother of Hugh the Abbot; and a member of the Bavarian branch of the Welfs.

In 858, at the coaxing of Charles the Bald, his cousin, he and his brother betrayed Louis the German when he sent them on an espionage mission and went over to Charles, who rewarded them handsomely because he had lost his Bavarian honors. He acted as Duke of Transjurane (Upper) Burgundy from then until about 864.

He married Judith, daughter of Eberhard of Friuli, and later Waldrada of Worms, by whom he left a son, Rudolf, who later became King of Transjurane Burgundy, and a daughter, Adelaide of Auxerre, who married Richard, Duke of Burgundy, and had issue.

My question is this: were there two Judiths of Friuli circa mid-800s to early 900s?

A Judith of Friuli married Adalbert of Thurgovie A Judith of Friuli married Arnulf the Bad

A Judith of Friuli was the daughter of Everhard of Friuli and Gisela of France.

What information I have been able to find so far suggests that the same Judith could not have been the mother of the children of both Adalbert and Arnulf for chronological reasons. However, I have also not found the parents of what would otherwise be the younger Judith, though one suggestion is that she is the daughter of Berengard I, King of Italy, and, therefore, niece of the older one.

I would appreciate any information that would help me resolve this.

The usually accepted daughters of King Berengar I were Gisela (born ca 880/5, died 13 June 910, married ca 900 Adalbert I, margrave of Ivrea) and Bertha (died 952), abbess of San Salvatore at Brescia.

The Judith who was a daughter of Margrave Eberhard of Friuli and Gisela of Francia was born ca 838 & died 863. She married in 852 as his first wife the East Frankish Count Heinrich, margrave in Frisia (born 830, killed in battle near Paris 20 August 886).

The other Judith who in ca 910 married Arnulf der Böse, duke of Bavaria (born ca 885/90, died 14 July 937) was a daughter of Eberhard, count in the Sülichgau & Gisela, whose exact parentage is not established. Arnulf tried unsuccessfully to assert this Judith's rights to the Lombard throne.

Adalbert II, count in the Thurgau died before ca 905, I think - I don't have a good reference at hand to see who he is supposed to have married, but if your source says Judith of Friuli was his wife then I'm not sure why she couldn't have later also married Arnulf of Bavaria. Or are you thinking of a different Adalbert?
