About Julia Mary (Warry) Marchant

Julia Morris was left a widow with two small boys to bring up, when her husband Jesse Warry, a schoolmaster, died very young in 1858. Julia Warry then went to Bedford College in London and trained to be a teacher. [ Bedford College was launched in 1849 by the Unitarian Elizabeth Jesser Reid and her friends Jane Martineau and Eliza Bostock, and comprised a school and a college. It formed part of the movement for higher education for women & girls during the nineteenth century. Gillian Sutherland:Faith, Duty and the power of mind:the Cloughs and their circle 1820-1960 Cambridge: CUP, 2006.] Her first position as a teacher was at Freshford Village School, where she met James Richard Marchant and he became her second husband, when they married in December 1868. It is uncertain whether she died in Freshford or Bath, but she was definitely buried in the churchyard at St Peter's, Freshford, Somerset, England. Her daughter Mary Male stayed in England but Kate Caroline married & lived in South Africa & she visited her family in England on several occasions with her children. Julia's daughter Alice also married & emigrated to Canada with her husband. Julia's first son Henry Morris Warry emigrated to Australia, while her second son Frederick Robert Warry stayed to learn the coach building craft from his step-father, James Richard Marchant and lived in England, at least while he was young. One wonders if Mrs Julia Marchant ever sailed to South Africa or Canada?
