About Julius Arnold Dugger

[Eddie WB Ancestors.ged]

This family has been created as a means of grouping the ARN OLD families who lived in Johnson County, Tennessee, in th e early 1800s. The approximate dates of birth for these ARN OLDs is such that it appears that they are siblings. It i s possiblethat these ARNOLD families are related to John AR RENDELL and his wife Mary. However, they were not mentione d in his will, and it appears that the ARRENDELLs took grea t care to mention their children in their wills. In viewin g the 1830 Carter County Census, which included all of Johnson County (founded in 1836), it also a ppears that more of the ARNOLD families lived in Carter Cou nty, while all of the ARRENDELLs lived in what would becom e Johnson County.

Julius A. Dugger was born ca 1777/78 in NC, most likely in Wilkes Co, NC on or near Elk Creek, probably in the Dugger Mountain vicinity. I am told by Robert T. Nave, (a noted researcher, and Dugger descendant) that Julius A. Dugger was, per family tradition, an illegitimate son of Julius Dugger (1760) and a Miss Arnold. He was born prior to Julius' (1760) marriage to Mary Hall ca 1779. So if illegitimate, the law would require him to use his mother's maiden name (or married name if married to or widowed from someone else at the time), so that would explain "Julius Arnold", the "Dugger" added onto his name could have been his own preference, or perhaps he had it legally changed, if Julius (1760) acknowledged him as his son.

In any event, I have seen no proof that Julius Arnold Dugger is a son of Julius Dugger (1760), but it seems to be a likely possibility. Other choices would be a son of William Dugger (1750) (who already had a son named Julius), or a son of Benjamin Dugger (c1747). I'll leave him with Julius (1760) until some evidence is found to sway me otherwise.

Julius A. Dugger may have married for the first time ca 1798 in Carter Co, TN (no record found). This is speculative, based on several children born in this timeframe that are thought to be his. If he was married around this time, this wife died before 1811.

Julius A. Dugger married Elizabeth "Betsy" Robinson on 24 Oct 1811 in Carter Co, TN (name and dates per Pam Creswell). I didn't find this marriage among the Carter Co, TN marriages, but this was shared with me by Pam Creswell, who is a Robinson researcher. She also shared the names and dates, etc of Julius and Betsy's two daughters. After looking again at the marriage records, I did find it. He is listed as "Julius D. Arnold" and she as "Elizabeth Robertson". This is further proof that he was illegitimate, why else use the name "Arnold" as a surname on some records, and "Dugger" on others.

For the War of 1812, Julius A. Dugger enlisted on 18 Oct 1813 Captain Jesse Cole's company. He either enlisted again, or we have another Julius A. Dugger, as someone with that name enlisted on 10 Sep 1814 as a Private in Captain Hunter's Tennessee Militia. This last record shows him dying 10 Nov 1814, which doesn't work four the Julius A. Dugger under study here. Either that date is wrong, or this is a different Julius. (Thanks to Carol Valantine Dugger and Mary Floy Katzman for sharing this information).

The 1820 census was lost for all of Eastern Tennessee, so we have no record of Julius A. Dugger from this census.

Julius' wife Betsy died sometime prior to 1824, for on 17 Apr 1824, "Julius A. Dugger" obtained a marriage bond in Carter Co, TN to marry Nancy Overbay.

Julius A. Dugger was listed on the 1830 census in Carter Co, TN. He wasn't listed near any of the other Dugger families. "William Overby" was listed two pages away, and could be a relative of Nancy. He was the only one of that surname in Carter Co, TN in 1830. Neither of Julius' two known daughters from his first marriage were yet married by 1830, but they weren't listed with him in this census. It is possible (and likely) that they went to live with Robinson relatives after their mother's death. There was one apparent daughter born ca 1815/20 with Julius in 1830. This one is unknown.

1830 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1830 Carter County, TN pg 33 Julius A. Dugger 0000000100000-0010010000000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 50-59 (1770-1780) Julius A. DUGGER (1777/78) s/o Julius (1760) 1 Female(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Nancy A. OVERBY Dugger (1789/90) wife 1 Female(s) 10-14 (1815-1820) Daughter?

Julius A. Dugger was listed on the 1840 census in Carter Co, TN. Once again, he wasn't near any other Dugger families. William Overby from 1830 was now on the same page with Julius. His age was about the same as Nancy's, so he could be her brother. Apparently, Julius and Nancy had no children together, or none that survived.

1840 census analysis (based on available evidence):

1840 Carter County, TN pg 179 Julas A. Dugar 0000000010000-0000000100000 Analysis: 1 Male(s) 60-69 (1770-1780) Julius A. DUGGER (1777/78) s/o Julius (1760) 1 Female(s) 50-59 (1780-1790) Nancy A. OVERBY Dugger (1789/90) wife

On the 1850 census, Julius A. Dugger and Nancy were listed in Carter Co, TN. Once again, they were not near any other Dugger families. The census taker for their district apparently misunderstood one of the census columns: the "Married within census year" column was supposed to be checked if the person had married between June 1849 and June 1850, but instead, he wrote in the marriage year of each couple, which was a pleasant "mistake" to find! He recorded Julius and Nancy's marriage as "1825" which is wrong, but close (1824). Once again, William Overby wasn't too far away, he was two pages distant on this census, listed as age "60" (same as Nancy).

(Note: The dates at the end of each line are not part of the original census, but are approximate birth years based on age)

Julius and Nancy were still in Carter Co, TN for the 1860 census. My listing is from an index, and isn't complete, but it lists them as: "Julius Duggar" age 87; and Nancy A. age 70.

Julius and Nancy both probably died between 1860 and 1870. I don't know if they were still living to see the Civil War (1861-1865).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Children I have no proof of any children of Julius A. Dugger. However, there are several possibilities. Pam Creswell, a Robinson researcher, has shared data with me on two daughters of Julius A. Dugger and his first wife Elizabeth Robinson. Ruby Coleman has also shared some data on this same family.

Robert T. Nave suggests that Julius A. Dugger also had two sons (Mark and Meredith), though it isn't sure who their mothers would be, if they are his, they come via a marriage prior to Elizabeth Robinson (whom he married in 1811). So far, both of these are otherwise unidentified, so he could be correct in assigning them here. This was speculative on his part, and on my part as well, but I'm starting to think this is correct. Evidence is lacking though. I've recently added one more to the list, based on the research of Dan Dugger and myself. It is starting to look like John A. Dugger also belongs here.

Mark Dugger (c1798)

John A. Dugger (c1806)

Meredith Arnold Dugger (c1808)

Freelove Dugger (1812)

Lydia Dugger (c1812)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mark Dugger was born ca 1797/98 in TN, presumably in Carter Co, TN. There is a strong tradition in this family of an Arnold family connection (per Wayne Dugger) and this is about the only place he fits. We don't know if Julius A. Dugger was even married ca 1798, though he was about 21 years old at that time, so easily could have been. Julius A. was 33 when he married in 1811, so he probably was married before that time, in all likelihood. Mark Dugger left for Pulaski Co, KY and married there in 1823 and was still there as late as 1870. See his own page for additional information on his family.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

John A. Dugger born ca 1805/06 in KY (probably Pulaski County). He was born in KY, and he married in Whitley Co, KY in 1830 to Elizabeth Comstock. She died ca 1836, and at that point he moved to Washington Co, TN, where Julius A. Dugger had been around that same timeframe. He married in 1838 to his second wife Lavina (or Malvina) Morris. He showed up there for the 1840, 1850 and 1860 census, but by 1870 had moved to Knox Co, TN. I have no direct proof that he is a son of Julius A. Dugger, but the "A" initial (possibly for Arnold) is a good clue, plus the locations, and the timeframes. He named one of his sons "Julius" so that is also a clue. In KY, he lived in the same vicinity as Mark Dugger, so that works also. See his own page for additional information.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meredith Arnold Dugger was born ca 1807/08, presumably in Carter Co, TN. He married Hannah Eaton on or about 23 Apr 1829 in Carter Co, TN. His marriage bond showed him as "Marridy D. Arnold". He was listed as "Meridy Dugger" on the 1830 census in Carter Co, TN, but he began using "Arnold" as his surname after this, perhaps, since legally, that was his father's surname, even though he (Julius A.) used "Dugger". This is all speculative of course. For the 1840 census, he was in Johnson Co, TN, listed as "Marida D. Arnold". I didn't see him in the 1850 census, though he was probably in Johnson Co, TN somewhere.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Freelove Dugger was born 17 Jun 1812 (per Ruby Coleman who says "from IGI") in Carter Co, TN. This was only 8 months after Julius and Elizabeth married, so either the birth year is off, or it isn't. On 4 Apr 1834 James B. Stone obtained a marriage bond in Carter Co, TN to marry Freelove Dugger. I didn't find them listed in Carter Co, TN for the 1840 census or the 1850 census. They might have been in neighboring Johnson Co, TN instead, I haven't checked yet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lydia Dugger was born ca 1813/14 in Carter Co, TN. This date conflicts with her sister Freelove's birth date only a few months earlier. One or both of these dates must be wrong. On 24 Mar 1832 John Blevins obtained a marriage bond in Carter Co, TN to marry Lydia Dugger. They were listed on the 1830 census in Carter Co, TN. There were two different John Blevins' were listed on the same page, one age 20-29, the other age 30-39, and I don't know which is this family. Both had wives in the 20-29 (1810/20) age group, which fits Lydia. For the 1840 census, John Blevins and family were just one page away from Julius A. Dugger. In 1850 the Blevins' were just two pages from Julius A. Dugger and family.
