About Julius Cornell Embree Haley

JULIUS CORNELL EMBREE HALEY On Friday evening April 16 and Saturday Morning, April 17, we will recognize and celebrate the life and crossing over of Architect, Korean War Veteran and youngest brother of Alex Haley, Julius Cornell Embree Haley, 79, adored and beloved husband of the late Ida Dolores Brown Sherrod Haley and devoted father of Alan Cornell and Christopher Embree Haley. Mr. Haley passed over Friday evening, April 9, 2010 from a brief illness.

Born in Henning, Tennessee on December 5, 1930, Julius, the youngest of three boys, Alex and George and older brother to one sister, Lois, volunteered for the Korean War conflict at 17 and grew in rank from Private to Master Sergeant in the army. Following his service, he met a young lady named Ida Dolores Brown Sherrod in the baseball stands at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. They were married in June 1954 and remained holding hands and laughing until her passing in August of 1988. He graduated with a degree in Architecture from Howard University in 1960 and subsequently served 25 years at the David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center in Carderock, Maryland. He was most proud of opening his own architectural firm, SAH, Inc. with partner Fred Thomas in Silver Spring, Maryland. SAH stood for Simon Alexander Haley, Julius father.

In addition to his two sons, he leaves an older brother, George Williford Boyce Haley; sisters-in-law, Doris Haley, Nan Haley and Theresa Sherrod; brothers-in-law, Phil Butts and Alfred Blackstone; nieces and nephews, Lydia Ann Haley, Anne Haley-Brown, Lisa and Andrea Blackstone, Cynthia Haley Dunn, Angela Mitchum and William Haley, David Haley, Alfred and Michael Blackstone, Michael and Ronald Sherrod, many more great-nieces and nephews and innumerable cherished cousins and friends.

On Friday, April 16, 2010, viewing will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the McGuire Funeral Home, 7400 Georgia Avenue, Washington DC 20012.
