Justin Browne (1976 - 1997)

Brief overview:

Justin (31), was murdered inside his home in Northworld, Randburg, when armed robbers broke into the house at around 21h00 on 25th August 2007. His throat was slit, and his wife, Geordie, was shot in the arm.

Justin, Geordie, and their two young daughters were in the bedroom at the time when they heard the dogs barking. The couple went to investigate and were confronted by two men, one carrying a gun and the other a knife, who pushed them back into the bedroom and tied them up. The attackers, who took Geordie's wedding and engagement rings from her finger, demanded guns, jewellery and money. They also demanded to know where Justin kept his firearm, saying that "their tip told them he had a gun". After killing Justin, they removed his wedding ring from his finger.

Geordie, managed to untie herself and call for help. The Honeydew police arrived on the scene shortly after David.

  • The robbers ransacked the home. "He just wanted to protect his family and then he was killed for R200 and rings - it's very tragic," said David Hossy a family friend. “They loaded a plasma screen television set and laptops in Justin's car, an Audi A4, but didn't take any of it. All they could get away with was R200, a mobile phone and a laptop."

  • On 24th April 2009, acting Judge Gerhardus Hattingh found three perpetrators guilty of murder and robbery. All three of them were Mozambique nationals. Kenneth Kaman Mukhari (34), alias Mario dos Santos, Jose Aurelio (33), alias Domingo Mathebula and Sidumo Mabaso (33). Judge Hattingh, said, "Justin was slaughtered like an animal in front of his children."
  • Mukhari who was the mastermind of the robberies in affluent areas around Randburg, was also found guilty on three counts of housebreaking and theft and two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances as well as the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Aurelio was also found guilty of housebreaking and theft, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as the murder of his brother-in-law, Reuben Mathebula, who died after being shot four times.
  • After the three were convicted, they appealed for leniency when sentencing was passed, claiming that they were all in their early 30's, married with minor children living in Mozambique. Geordie was outraged at the convicted killers plea, and requested to read messages that her children had written.
