About Justin Harvey Smith
Son of Rev. Ambrose Smith and Cynthia Maria (Egerton) Smith. 1st husband of Mary Ellen Barnard (later divorced). Dr. Smith was a descendant of Mayflower passenger Gov. William Bradford via his mother's father, Ariel Egerton Jr (1789-1859).
Justin Harvey Smith was an educator, publisher and Pulitzer Prize winning author, with degrees from Dartmouth University (BA 1877, MA 1884) where he was class valedictorian in 1877. Justin also studied at the Union Theological Seminary from 1878-1881. Professionally, Justin was Principal of the Evening School in Boston, MA (1878-1879) and Superintendent of Schools in Malden, MA (1879). He was an agent of publisher Charles Scirbners' Sons in New York City from 1881-1884, then a manager at the home office of Ginn & Company (1883-1898, becoming a partner in 1890). Justin was also a professor of Modern History at Dartmouth College (1899-1908). He was the Chairman of the Historical Manuscripts Commission of the American Historical Association from 1917-1923.
His book, The War With Mexico, earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1920 as well as the Loubat Prize in 1923.
