About Justin Paul Theroux

An exceptionally versatile character actor and occasional lead in features and television, Justin Theroux tackled both comedy and drama with equal deftness throughout his decade-plus career, and proved himself a talented comedy writer as well by penning the scripts for Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2.

Justin Paul Theroux was born in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 10, 1971. His father, Eugene, was a corporate lawyer, while mother Phyllis was a novelist, as was his uncle, Paul Theroux, author of The Mosquito Coast. Cousins Marcel and Louis Theroux would also follow a career path in writing as journalists and television presenters in England. However, Justin struggled to find his own way as a teenager; he was ejected from several schools for various reasons in his late adolescence and early teenage years before finding a foundation at the Buxton School, a boarding school in Williamstown, MA. Its curriculum required him to make his own meals and perform various chores in addition to maintaining his studies. Not surprisingly, he became grounded as a result of the regimen. Theroux also gained his first exposure to acting at Buxton, and settled on drama and visual arts as his focus. After graduating from Bennington College in Vermont, Theroux attended the British American Drama Academy, where he further honed his acting talents in a variety of Shakespearean productions. He moved to New York City, where he supported himself as a painter before becoming a member of several prestigious theater groups, including the Roundabout Theatre and Actor's Playhouse. While appearing in a production of Three Sisters with Jeanne Tripplehorn, he befriended her then-fiancé, Ben Stiller, who would have a major impact on his later career.

He began his onscreen career in indies like I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) before moving effortless into Hollywood titles like Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997). He was adept at playing slick, soulless professionals, like an arrogant film director in David Lynch's Mulholland Dr. (1997) and a business friend of Christian Bale's deranged Paul Bateman in American Psycho (2000), but could also play thoughtful, caring men, like his cerebral suitor who charmed Rachel Griffiths on Six Feet Under (HBO, 2001-05). Theroux's strongest suit, however, was offbeat comedy, and he mined that field on numerous occasions throughout his career in features like Zoolander (2001) and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003). He made a modest debut as a director on the indie drama Dedication (2006), but found greater success as a writer on the over-the-top comedy Tropic Thunder (2008) and the blockbuster Iron Man 2 (2010). His dual status as favored actor and screenwriter made Theroux a genuine hyphenate, and one whose career appeared to be just accessing its upper reaches.

In 2012 he co-starred in Wanderlust opposite Jennifer Aniston who he ended up in a high-profile relationship with. That same year he had screenwriting credits on a pair of films, the hair-metal musical Rock of Ages and the sci-fi action comedy The Watch.

On August 12, 2012, Theroux and Aniston publicly announced their engagement. Theroux proposed to Aniston on his birthday, August 10th.
