About Kate Shelley Duniway

The Portland Oregonian, January 9, 1941 "Death Claims City Pioneer" Old Fall Fatal to Mrs. Duniway

Mrs. Ralph R. Duniway, 71, of 2216 E. Burnside street, a member of one of Portland's old families, died Wednesday night. Mrs. Duniway had been confined to Restwell sanitarium, Lake Oswego, for nearly a year and her health had been failing since she received a fractured hip in a fall four years ago. The injury had never healed properly.

Born Kate Schermerhorn in Rochester, N. Y., October 10, 1869, Mrs. Duniway spent most of her girlhood in Cleveland, O., reared by an aunt and uncle after the death of her parents.

She came to Portland in the early 1890s and for several years taught in local high schools and in the Allen Preparatory school.

The Duniways wer married here in 1894. They had met through mutual interests in Unitarian church activities. Mr. Duniway, one of Portland's best-known early-day citizens, died in 1920. The Duniway home on E. Burnside has been a landmark for years. Mrs Duniway was one of the organizers of the Half Hour Study Club.

Survivors include a son, Robert E. Duniway, well known in the insurance business here; a daughter, Katherine Duniway, teacher at Milwaukie high school; two grandchildren, Ralph and Shirley Duniway; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Willis Duniway and Mrs. Wilkie Duniway, both of Portland, and a brother-in-law, Dr. Clyde Duniway, eduator and lecturer and at present a member of the Stanford university faculty at Palo Alto, Cal.
