About Kate Mildred Penner
Kate Osborne was the daughter of David Madison Osborne and Mary Porter Guerrant Osborne. They came to De Soto, Kansas, in 1868, arriving by rail at the Lenape train depot and continuing on to Anderson County. Kate married John R. Penner, and they had a son, Louis Roscoe Penner, who married Pansy Faye Dent in Topeka, Kansas. They had a son named Louis Leland Penner, who in turn had a son named Paul Lee Penner, who lives in De Soto, Kansas, and Paul had a sister, Gail Louise Penner Funk, who lives in Lawrence, Kansas.
The following obituary is from a local newspaper, The Johnson County Democrat dated November 25, 1948, as shown on Find A Grave.com: Mrs. Kate M. Penner, mother of Johnson County Commissioner, Dies in a Hospital: Mrs. Kate M. Penner, 88 years old, the mother of Lou R. Penner, Johnson County, Kansas, commissioner, died Sunday night at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kansas. She was admitted there September 5th for treatment of a fractured hip after she fell at the home of her son near DeSoto, where she had lived the last few years.
Mrs. Penner was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and moved to Kansas with her parents in 1868. She lived near Garnett, Kansas, until 1888, five years after her marriage to John R. Penner, when they moved to a farm near De Soto. She had lived at that farm until moving to her son's home. She was a member of the Methodist church in De Soto.
She leaves also another son, Frank Hugh Penner, Lawrence; two daughters, Mrs. Raine P. Dolores, Thermopolis, Wyoming, and Miss Jessie Ruth Penner, Arlington, Virginia; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church in De Soto with burial in the De Soto cemetery.
