About Kate Wollman
Lived most of her adult years in NYC first in a 22 room family apartment on W 70th and then for the last 24 years in a 20 room suite at the Waldorf. She paid $1,000 per month for the entire 24 years she lived there. She was a good investor, liked fine things but could be frugal. Was generous and followed her brothers' wishes regarding charities. She loved entertaining her extended family. Paid for the college tuition of nine grandnieces and grandnephews including Betty Slegman, Helen Bernstein and the three Bloch boys. She initially loaned the money to Henry and Richard Bloch to start what became H&R Block. She gave 80% of the money for the skating rink at Central Park, named Wollman Rink in her honor in 1949.
