Catherine Montgomery Bledsoe was a Revolutionary War patriot and heroine. Once she was carrying important papers to the patriot army by horseback and inadvertently rode up on a British officer who stopped her and tried to engage her in conversation. Fearing he might become suspicious, she cleverly challenged him to a race knowing she was sure to outrun him, which she did, and made it to safety.
