4 October 1539: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland by which James V, King of Scots, confirms that he had give the lands and barony of Cambusnethan anew to John Somerville of Cambusnethan and his wife Katherine Carmichael, to be held by them in conjunct fee and liferent, and thereafter by their lawful male heirs, whom failing by John's nearest lawful heirs whatsoever. Biographical Summary

Catherine Carmichael, daughter of Sir John Carmichael of Meadowflat , captain of Crawford Castle, became the mistress of King James V. The king built the castle of Crawfordjohn in Clydesdale in 1528 for her, and as a place for them to meet undisturbed. She bore him a son, John Stewart (6th Earl of Bothwell), and a daughter Mary (or Janet) who married the Earl of Caegyle; who were half-brother and half-sister to Mary, Queen of Scots. Catherine married James Somerville by 1537. Their children were: 1. James Somerville , 'Velvet Eye' of Cambusneth b: ABT 1539 2.Robert, 2nd son. 3. daughter, "married meanly by her stepmother" to Gawin Hamilton of the Nether Hills
