MANCHESTER - Katherine M. Gerrity, 62, went to be with God on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, after a long, intense battle with cancer.
Katherine was born on Oct. 13, 1954, in Beaumont, Texas. Her parents, deceased, were John and Elizabeth Moseley. Katherine attended Monmouth Regional High School in New Jersey, and college at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.
In 1977, she married her husband, Bruce. They headed north from Virginia in 1979 for their lifelong adventure in Maine. A Texas girl, Katherine came to love Maine's winters. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this summer.
Katherine had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord. She was a member of the Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta. She lived her faith every day with a smile on her face and love in her heart.
Katherine loved children. Her goal, which she achieved, was to be a teacher. She taught in Texas, Virginia, and Maine. After retiring from Chelsea Elementary School in Maine, she owned her own nursery school. Many children in our area grew up benefiting from her tutelage.
Katherine loved her dogs and was never seen without them. She trained them with love, affection and an occasional stern voice. Many a neighbor stopped to chat with her while she was on one of her frequent walks with one or more of them.
Katherine's favorite place in the world was her cottage in Bayside on Penobscot Bay. She brought her family there for the summer every year. She would explore the shore with her children and their friends; crabs, clamshells, sea glass, sand dollars, and other treasures found their way to the cottage porch with regularity.
Katherine loved home projects, both at home in Manchester and at the cottage. She was, as necessary, a carpenter, plumber, gardener, landscaper, and whatever else was required. No wall or shingle was ever safe from the paintbrush!
She loved the Daily Jumble. She never allowed an answer to escape, even if it meant drafting her family and friends into the effort to unearth the solution.
Katherine was adventurous. She regularly took off on cross-country trips with the children and her friend Lucille Suitter, traveling to Wisconsin, St. Louis, Texas, Georgia, and points in between.
Katherine was not a political person, but she pitched in and was a gracious host for many events at her home, entertaining state and congressional legislators and a governor or two.
