About Katharine Stirling
Birth: Jun. 14, 1935 Santa Monica Los Angeles County California, USA Death: Jan. 5, 2006 Aspen Pitkin County Colorado, USA
Entrepreneur. The daughter of actress, Norma Shearer, and producer, Irving Thalberg, Katharine, along with her older brother, Irving, Jr., grew up surrounded by Hollywood royalty. However, by all accounts, her childhood was anything but happy. While her famous parents kept long hours at MGM by day and hosted myriad parties at their Santa Monica beachfront mansion by night, young Katharine was raised by nannies and was subsequently sent away to boarding schools in France and Switzerland. After returning to California, she graduated from the prestigious West Lake School for Girls in Holmby Hills, then went on to study at Vassar and Stanford University before earning her bachelor's degree in English literature from UCLA. Thalberg was married three times, first to alpine skier, Jack Reddish, then to actor, Richard Anderson, with whom she had three daughters. In 1973, after divorcing Anderson, she moved to Aspen, Colorado, where, two years later, she opened "Explore Booksellers," followed by Aspen's first vegan restaurant in the building's upstairs attic, both of which were to become fixtures in the community. It was in Aspen that she met and married her third husband, Bill Stirling, who would later become the city's mayor. Always politically active, she became somewhat notorious for organizing crusades against the sale of fur in Aspen. After a two-year battle, she succumbed to cancer at the age of 70.
