Katherine Chi Tai (born 1974/1975[1]) is an American attorney who serves as the chief trade counsel for the United States House Committee on Ways and Means. On December 10, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Tai as United States Trade Representative, a position subject to Senate confirmation.
Tai is fluent in Mandarin. Her Chinese name is Chinese: 戴琪; pinyin: Dài Qí; Wade–Giles: Tai4Ch'i2.
Early life and education
Tai was born in Connecticut and grew up in Washington, D.C., where she attended Sidwell Friends School.[3] Her parents immigrated to the United States from Taiwan.[4][5] Tai graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.[6] She taught English at Sun Yat-sen University as a Yale-China Fellow for two years.[7]
