About Katherine Louise Terry
Literary Figure. Born Katherine Louise Flynn near Dublin, Ireland, she ran away to Liverpool at fifteen where she took a position as a barmaid in the Washington Hotel. A year later, she fell in with a pair of Americans who claimed to be businessmen. In reality, Adam Worth and Charles Bullard were high end con men and thieves. Both men courted Kitty and they formed a romantic triplet, which apparently remained the case even after she married Bullard. The trio left Britain for Paris where they opened the American Bar, a café and casino, where Kitty established herself as a popular hostess. Since many of the American Bar's entertainments were illegal and the hosts were both wanted men in the United States, it was decided to close the Bar once the attention from the Surete and the Pinkerton Detective Agency became worrisome. The three returned to Britain, where they lived under assumed names, posing as businessmen. Bullard's drinking, however, became a problem; that coupled with the fact that his legal wife had finally found detectives to track him down and expose his bigamy, drove Kitty to leave. She and her two daughters traveled to the United States with a cut from Worth and Bullard's funds. Once established comfortably in New York, Kitty was wooed and wed by a Wall Street banker of Irish-Venezuelan descent named Juan Terry. Kitty retired into respectability and after six years of marriage, Terry died while on a business trip. In 1893, Adam Worth was arrested and his duel life of respectable gentleman and criminal mastermind was exposed. In New York, Kitty read of his trial; she forwarded him money and helped pay for his defense. Within a year, however, Kitty died of Bright's disease. Kitty was immortalized in a wildly inaccurate novel, allegedly based on her life, by Rosamund de Zeer Marshall. The novel was later made into the 1945 film, ‘Kitty,' starring Paulette Goddard. Kitty's grandson, Juan Terry Trippe, founded Pan American Airlines.
