About Katherine Jane Toothman

Retired Home Economics Teacher - Waynesburg / Central Greene School District

Katherine Jane Throckmorton Toothman, 92, of Waynesburg, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, in her home.

She was born New Year's Eve, December 31, 1919, in Waynesburg, the only daughter of the late Robert L. Throckmorton Sr. and Ella May Watson Throckmorton.

Mrs. Toothman was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased are an older brother, Robert L. Throckmorton Jr.; a younger brother, William A. Throckmorton; and a grandchild, Stephen M. Toothman.

She was the widow of the late Judge Glenn J.R.T. Toothman Jr., past president judge of Greene County, whom she married in Winchester, Va., April 3, 1942. They were married 59 years, until her husband's passing in 2001. They met while attending Potomac State University in Keyser, W.Va., just prior to World War II. Since Potomac State was only a two-year college, she finished her college degree at West Virginia University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in home economics. From this education, she dedicated her life's work to teaching and served as a home economics teacher in several different capacities. She retired from Central Greene School District, having taught there more than 25 years with many of her students winning state and national awards for their abilities.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed teaching the skills of sewing and knitting, but also loved to do these things for herself and family and knitted up to the very end of her life. Upon her retirement from teaching, she opened and operated, for many years, a retail fabric and sewing store in Morgantown, W.Va., known as The Sew Inn. It is now under different ownership, but continues to provide fabrics and tools to the sewing public, as she was so happy to be involved in.

Surviving are four children, Harry S. Toothman (Karen ) of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Glenn J.R.T. Toothman III Esq. (Dianne) of Waynesburg, Judge Farley D. Toothman (Ingrid) of Waynesburg and Ellan M. Toothman Gannis (Ed) of Waynesburg; and nine grandchildren.

There will be no public viewing. Final arrangements will be conducted as a private service at the discretion of the family. Burial will be in Oakmont Cemetery, Waynesburg. Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
