About Katheryn Brooke
The information concerning the BROOKE family in England is based primarily on articles in The American Genealogist, Vol. 55, pp. 193-206.
WGA
Katheryn married (2) on 22 September 1554, John Beereman or Beryman, citizen and ironmonger of London, and removed to his house called the Black Bell in the parish of St. Margaret's Bridgestreet (now New Fish Street), probably no more than one or two blocks from her former home. This marriage followed by a couple of months that of her son John. John Beryman's will was dated 18 February 1564/1565 and proved 2 March 1565/1566 [Commissary Court of London Huick (1559-1570) p. 356]; among others, it mentions John Broke, Letherseller. Katheryn's will was dated 14 March 1565/1566, proved 24 March following [Commissary Court of London, Juick (1559-1570), p. 247]. She directed that her body be buried in the porche of the parish church of St. Margaret in Bridgestreet. Mentions sister Johan Woodde, daughter Margarette Hartinge, daughter Frances Clerke, William Hartinge husband of Margarette, daughter Isabel Wilson and her husband John Wilson citizen and draper of London; Katheryn Noble, widow, my kinswoman; John Broke my son. John Broke and John Wilson were Executors. The will is extremely detailed, with many additional bequests. Further research has not made clear Katheryn's maiden name, but bequests in the wills led the author to the conclusion she came to London from the Milton-Iwade area of Kent, and was related in some way to families named Miles and Westby, perhaps even to Seaths.
