About Keats Oliver

April 3, 1928 — May 3, 2007

Keats Oliver, retired civil engineer and long-time resident of Albany, passed away peacefully Wednesday at Regency Albany nursing home.

He was born in Seattle to Egbert Samuel and Helen (Tarbell) Oliver. The family moved to Salem in 1929, where Keats' father taught English at Willamette University.

Keats entered the U.S. Navy four months before the end of World War II and received an honorable discharge.

Keats married Doris Gene Hamilton on April 4, 1948, in Salem. They had five children.

He went to work for the Oregon State Highway Department at age 18 and retired in 1983 after 37 years of service. In 1964, he was the youngest person in Oregon's history to obtain his resident engineer license and the only person to receive such certification without a college degree. He built roads all over Oregon and moved with each project during the early years. The family lived in Bend, Vale, Condon, Fossil, Milton-Freewater, Clatskanie, Lincoln City and Astoria before settling in Albany in 1967. He managed the crew that built the Lyon Street bridge in Albany.

He enjoyed dancing, especially square dancing, and was a square dance caller for many years. His favorite pastimes included deer and elk hunting, camping, boating and playing cards. He was a mathematician, who enjoyed mathematics games. He was gifted at drawing in pencil and charcoal. He played the accordion as a young man.

Keats is survived by wife Gene of Albany; children Marie Lyn Oliver of Albany, Kenneth Byron Oliver of Newberg, Kevin Lee Oliver of Jefferson and Sherry Ann Oliver of Albany; grandchildren Jeffrey Hamilton Oliver of Corvallis and Elizabeth Ann Oliver of Newberg; and only sister Lillian Emma (Oliver) McLaughlin of McMinnville.

His eldest daughter, Sheila Kay (Oliver) Orton, preceded him in death in 2002.

The family will host an informal open house to celebrate Keats' life from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 3209 Columbus St. S.E., in Albany.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321 (www.fisherfuneralhome.com).
