About Kelly Wallace Hamilton
Kelly & his family owned & operated an ol d - f a s h i o n e d G e n e r a l Store near Laurel Point & Head of Grassy, (Vanceburg) KY. (The store was leveled by a fire that started in the house). Philip E. Hamilton, now age 77 (s of Olen, gs Kelly) remembers visiting his Grandparent’s store as a child, trading eggs for other food items. He recollects times when his Grampa would give him, his siblings, orfriends penny candies! One candy was called “Guess What?” This candy was popular at the time (1940’s). Inside the w r a p p e r you could find riddles, miniature games, and trivia! At times, don’t you long for those days ~ when candy only cost a penny, milk was fresh from the cow, and gasoline didn’t cost over $3 per gallon? !
I being the oldest child became an early baby sitter. Tinker was in my care. A rock turned over and he fell in rain barrel. Called Mother who came and pulled him out. We both cried. He fell in creek and I jumped in and pulled him out. Helped Mother and others with dishes, churn, etc. See that wood and kindleing in to build fires. Helped Dad clean new ground each winter. Used cross-cut saw - all kinds timber jobs. Went to school and when about 18 choose to go to more school. Dad gave me a 20 dollar bill. I went to Morehead to school - 8th grade. Helped Dad through crops - then to Indiana got job - worked - back to some more school in winter. Got teacher's certificate. Then taught one year. Married and raised 14 children. I an now a ripe old age of 81 years. I kept the faith to live hereafter, so I realize it won't be long until reality. - Kelly Hamilton
