Originally Butternut Valley Township included what is now Cambria Township until 1867. Settlement was confined to the portion of Cambria Township along the Minnesota and Little Cottonwood Rivers and Cambria Creek until after 1862. (see Cambria Township). Butternut Valley Township has no creeks or rivers, but has three lakes within its boundaries: Strom Lake, Armstrong Lake and Lieberg Lake. In its natural state the township was a vast rolling prairie, but settlement added the planting of trees and groves. The first settlers came in 1857, among them were: Andrew Strom, Evan Peterson, Thomas Thomas, George Smith and Joseph Smith. Soon after came Knut Strom, William Jones and William Griffith. Arriving in Butternut Valley Township in 1863 were: Charles Shelby, Ole Siverson, Olens Solberg, Christian Erickson, Lars Halverson, David Davis, George Keenan and John Hamil. In 1864 came Tolaf Holverson, P.O. Hovey, William Jenkins, Ole Lieberg, Owen Pritchard, Kidal Rasmussen, Simon Roland and

John bought 40 acres of land for $1000 from Knute and Sophie Strom on 20 January 1893. This was the SW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 25, Township 108 N., Range 30 W.51

Because of its lack of timber and rivers, Butternut Valley was somewhat avoided by settlers in the early 1800’s. Andrew Strom, of Norway, settled his family in Butternut in 1857. About the same time, Evan Peterson and his family settled in another section of Butternut, and George W. Smith staked claims as well. While it is hard to determine who the real first settler is, Strom is generally given credit. Not many more settlers came until 1863. At this time, about two dozen more people came to the township.

Butternut Valley Township was called “Cottonwood Settlement,” but in December of 1856, Col. S. D. Shaw suggested the name “Butternut Valley,” after all the butternut trees. Until 1867, the township also included Cambria Township within its borders

The first white child was born in the township to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Strom in 1858. The Stroms also had the first school meetings in their house. Church services were held in various homes of Norwegian settlers, but there was no official pastor, so the services did not meet very regularly. In 1882, a church building was built and named “The Norwegian Lutheran Church.”
