Brief overview:

Kurt (27), an IT Specialist and father-to-be from Benoni, was shot dead in an armed robbery at the Lion Park in Muldersdrift on Sunday 6th January 2008.

Frances McNamara (49), Kurt's fiancée's (Stacey Wooley, 23) mother, said that she ran to him when he collapsed after being shot in the chest. Kurt could not speak, and died almost immediately. Frances said that the robbery had already happened, but they perpetrators still shot Kurt.

Stacey, who was four months pregnant with Kurt's child at the time, her daughter, Tyler (6), her mother Frances, and Frances' other grandchild, aged two, crawled under tables when the robbers invaded the restaurant. Frances wanted to warn Kurt, and crawled towards the bathroom door where Kurt was, but she heard the gunfire, and saw him fall.

Kurt's father, Dieter Huppe said he received a call from an hysterical Stacey shortly after 2.30pm, saying that Kurt had just been shot. Dieter and his wife June drove to the Lion Park. While they were still driving, they received the call to say that Kurt had already passed.

Inspector Odette van Staden said eight men stormed the restaurant in the park at about 2.30pm and ordered cashiers to hand over money. The robbers also stole from some of the patrons.

  • In October 2008 Six suspects were arrested, and police on Wednesday urged other victims at the restaurant to come forward. "We initially had eight suspects, and this means we still have outstanding arrests to make," said police spokesperson Inspector Tebogo Kgomo.

  • The six men appeared in the Krugersdorp magistrate's court on Friday and were due to appear again. They couldn't be named at the time as an identification parade was held. The suspects are expected to face charges of murder and armed robbery.
