About LCpl. George Peter William Hitchman
George Peter William Hitchman was born at Taonui in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island on 9 February 1892 (reg. 1892/2712). His parents were William Hitchman and Eliza Ann Hitchman (nee Irwin) who had married in Feilding on 2 April 1883. George was a farmer before he joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 2nd Battalion during World War I (Service No. WWI 49710). His name is recorded on his War Record as 'William George Hitchman'. George received a gunshot wound to the head in France. He later died of his wounds in the 12th General Hospital at Rouen which was run at that time by the United States. George was buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, [S. II. T. 9.]. His brother, Hugh Joseph Carroll Hitchman, had been killed the previous year at Ypres in Belgium on 1 August 1917 (bio by Debbie McCauley, 15 January 2022).
