OBITUARY

THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, September 26, 1918

LABAN FILLMORE MAPLE

The death of Mr. L. F. Maple, one of Charitons best-known merchants, came as a shock to many of his friends as he had seemed to be well on the way to recovery from his recent illness, when he was sticken with a hemorrhage of the brain and died in a few hours on last Saturday evening, Sept. 21, 1918.

The funeral services were held at the home on Court avenue Monday afternoon, Sept. 23. The local Iseminger Post, G.A.R., of which Mr. Maple had long been a member, conducted the G.A.R. ritual. Following, Rev. Donovan made a brief address on the life of the deceased, which together with some beautifully rendered sacred music, and prayer, concluded the service at the home. Interment was made at the Chariton cemetery, Rev. Donovan having charge of the service at the grave.

Mr. Maple began his life on the prairies of Illinois on November 10th, 1846. Before his parents moved to Lucas county, Iowa, in 1855, the lad had already become familiar with the name Abraham Lincoln and the great struggle which was soon to break forth. He grew up during the years of that mighty struggle, committed to it so thoroughly that he seized the first opportunity to enlist. That opportunity was the call for 100 day men to assist in completing the victory which had become certain by the successes of Grant and his colleagues.

Exactly 54 years ago Mr. Maple was mustered out from the military service of his country, settling here in Chariton where he went in business to remain in the same until the day of his death.

On January 15th, 1873, he married Miss Ella Wright, who died April 21, 1891, leaving him with three daughters, Mrs. James Baker, Miss Edith Maple and Miss Florence Maple. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice Larimer, of this city, and by one brother, Wm. H. Maple, now of Chicago, and who at one time was editor of the Chariton Patriot.

During his residence here at Chariton, Mr. Maple enjoyed the confidence of his fellow citizens, expressed in many ways. For a number of years he was postmaster. To all who knew him, he was a source of cheer and encouragement. In spite of his frail health during the latter years of his life, Mr. Maple remained the kindly neighbor and the genial comrade and friend of a great circle of acquaintances.
