The Men of Skye by Roderick MacCowan
Lachlan MacRae Was born in Craignish, Minginish, parish of Bracadale. In his youth he was light and gay, but when the Lord began the good work in him, old things passed away and all things became new. He afterwards married a daughter of Angus Munro, Gaelic teacher, Drummuie, who is said to have been a pious woman. He occupied a croft in Soa, and was missionary to the people of that island, which has a population of about 70 souls, who, at the Disruption, came out en masse, leaving not a hoof behind them. He was a man of a broken and a contrite heart, an enemy to sin, and one who had the experiences and trials of God's people. He was a man of prayer. His insulated position prevented him from being so well and popularly known as others, but he faithfully witnessed for Christ in his day and generation, and then " fell asleep." There was an eminently godly woman in Soa about the time of the Disruption,. Chirsty MacDonald. She was called " The Queen of Soa" She was for a considerable time confined to bed, and would say to those who attended her—" Lift me till I get to my knees."
