About Lancelot Bathurst, Alderman of London

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARY,BOTHAW,LONDON,ENGLAND. , LONDON The church of St. Mary, Bothaw, London (also known as St. Mary by the Erber) is where Lancelot Bathurst was buried, it is also the church he used for the Christenings of his children & later some of the children got married in this church. This Church no longer stands today for two reasons.

Many churches within the City of London were in such a bad state of repair following the Great Fire of London which raged from the 02 Sept' to 05 Sept' 1666 it consumed 13,200 homes & 87 churches within the Roman built walls of this Medievil City. Most of the slum areas were gutted bit the more affluent areas escaped as by the time it reached these areas the garrison at the Tower of London used gunpowder to create firebreaks to stop further spread.

The Great Plague (1665-1666) with it's high mortality rate within London when some 100,000 deaths, estimated as being 20% of Londons population ,that in 1670 a Rebuilding Act was passed, at the head of this committee was Sir. Christopher Wren, one of the most highly acclaimed English architects who was responsible for buuilding St. Pauls Cathedral.

The committee had to decide which of the churches was to be rebuilt, 51 were chosen but St. Marys, Bothaw was not amongst them. The land where the church stood is to the South of Cannon Street, & was under the Patronage of Canterbury Cathedral.

Occupation: Alderman Of London, Lord Mayor Of London 27 Nov 1593 (Ben M. Angel notes: Sir Cuthbert Buckle was elected Lord Mayor in 1593, but died in office. However, he was succeeded by Richard Martin, who remained in office for some time after his succession.
