Lane Slane

Lane Slane was born in Rush couty Indiana March 25, 1827 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Fairchild in Burlington, May 20, 1914, aged 87 years, 1 month and 25 days. When he was a small boy his father died, leaving him to help support his mother. On September 1, 1851, he was united in marriage to Mary F. Edwards in Lebanon, Ind. They lived in Indiana until 1877 when they moved to a farm near Burlington, Kansas, and lived there until they moved into Burlington about 23 years ago, where they have resided since that time.
During his residence in Indiana, the civil war broke out and he enlisted in Company I, 86th, Indiana, August 14, 1862, to serve his country. After three years of service he was honorably discharged June 6th, 1865 at Nashville Tenn. The 86th regiment was discharged with a very creditable record, having taken part in some of the important battles.
To Mr. and Mrs. Slane were born seven children, one dying in infancy, and one son William died July 30, 1910. The surviving one are Nelse Slane, Mrs. W. H. Schlichter, Mrs. H. Shannon, Mrs. Mary Fairchild and John Slane in Coffey county, except John who lives in Oregon.
Mr. Slane's aged wife died February 13, 1914, just three months and seven day before his death. His health has been failing ever since his wife's death. On Wednesday morning he was striken with paralysis and was unconscious until death came at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. He was a patient sufferer, never complaining of anything. About 45 years ago he united with the Baptist church while living in Indiana. He was an active church worker until his health failed him, but always willing to help in any way possible.
