Coon Valley: En Historisk Beretning om de norske menigheter I Coon Valley. by Hjalmar R. Holand Augsburg Publishing House Minneapolis, Minn. 1928

I raised a company of men for the army in 1862. We went into camp at La Crosse. The good people of Coon Valley gave us a dinner on our way. We had the dinner in the yard of Lars K. Brye on improvised tables. There wert [sic] 128 men of the company and many citizens from here (Viroqua) and along the road going in with us. I should think there were about 175 persons with teams necessary to haul us all. I had charge of the whole outfit, but many good men helped me. Your uncle Peter O. Brye was there to make us all welcome as he knew practically all. There were about 30 Norwegian [sic] Soldiers along and the balance of the men were mixed-Americans, Germans, Irish- made no difference; we were all in favor of whipping the rebels.

After we got to La Crosse we found they did not allow a company to have more than 101 men, so all the Norwegian boys and some of the Americans went into Company K, our Company was A. Company K had many other Norwegians among them, but not enough for a whole company.

John P. Johnson, Peder Lindal, Ole Nelson, Thor Slaaen, Per Knudson (Brye), Carl Olson Stene, Omund Storbakken, Ole Larson (Sorkness) - Disse faldt I krigen.

Ole Kjøstelson (Dauve) Torger Erickson, Ole Evenson (Staven), Andreas Kinserdal, Søren Olson Tveten, John Mattison, Per Olson Ødegaarden, Casper Simonson, Torger Slaaen, Torger Bekkum, John Storbakken, Erland Gundstuen, Østen Rulland, Knudt Harahaugen, Bent Markusen, Elias Rønning, Simon Amundson, Lars Amundson, Neri Nerison, Ole Graupe, Mathias Mattson, Ole B.
