Laura was born to Leander Houck and Anna Catherine Link of Caldwell County, North Carolina. She married Eli Curlee and moved to Gaston County, N.C. They had five children who lived beyond infancy: Charlotte May, Bertha,Ella Daisy, Anna Pearl, and Bryon Herron Curlee.

She died of a stroke at age 87.
