About Lawrence Edward Ryder
Private Lawrence Ryder: he joined the NZ Army during World War 2 and served Greece and Egypt. He embarked from Wellington, New Zealand on 5 Jan 1940 in the transport vessel Strathaird for Suez, Egypt. He served in Greece and then North Africa. He was mortally wounded by enemy mortar fire during the First Battle of El Alamein and died in hospital. Service number: 35413. He is memorialised at the Alamein Memorial at the El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt - Column 104. The Land Forces panels of the Alamein Memorial commemorate more than 8,500 soldiers of the Commonwealth who died in the campaigns in Egypt and Libya, and in the operations of the Eighth Army in Tunisia up to 19 February 1943, who have no known grave. It also commemorates those who served and died in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Persia.
