Leander Houck was born in the area of old Rowan County or Burke County that is probably present day Catawba County. To date, the identity of his parents remains a mystery. Genealogical researcher (the late) Carl Anderson interviewed several older descendants who believe that Leander was reared in the home of an uncle, George Houck. But which George Houck?
In November 1842, he married Anna Catherine Link. They moved across the Catawba River to Caldwell County, first making their home in a log cabin in the town of Lenoir. Later they moved out to Greasy Creek. Leander Houck helped build the first buildings in Lenoir. He was also a farmer, and helped one of his sons run a grist mill. Many of his descendants still populate Caldwell and surrounding counties.
Leander's grave was moved from his yard at Greasy Creek to the cemetery in Rutherford College.
