LEE W. LOCKE, CIVIL SERVICE CHAIRMAN, DIES - Long Prominent In County GOP Politics
The death of Lee W. Locke, prominent Edmeston business man and Republican leader in Otsego county for many years, occurred early Monday morning at his home in that village following and illness of two years. He was 77 years of age. At his death, Mr. Locke was chairman of the Otsego County Civil Service Commission. A life-long resident of Edmeston, Mr. Locke was born in the community on September 6, 1875, son of Lamott and Ella (Talbot) Locke. He was married to the former Miss Helen Edmonds, whose death occurred in 1918. In 1920, he married the former Alice Smith of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Edmeston High School; and Colgate Academy at Hamilton. He operated a clothing store in Edmeston for many years. He had been Supervisor from the town of Edmeston for 12 years, and for 12 years prior to 1933, was postmaster in that village. For the past 25 years, he has been vice-president of the First National Bank of Edmeston, and had been agent for the surety company. He was a trustee of the Edmeston Baptist Church, an honorary member of the Edmeston Rotary club, a past Master of Farmers Lodge No. 553, F. and A.M. in Edmeston, a past District Deputy Grand Master of the Otsego-Schoharie Masonic District, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Edmeston Library. He is survived by his wife, a son, Edward O. Locke of Laurence Harbor, NJ; two grandchildren and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Houk Funeral Home in Edmeston with the Rev. Donald Benoit, pastor of the Edmeston Baptist Church, officiating.
