About Leighton Hartzell Rice

The Gettysburg Times December 21, 1936

Leighton Hartzell Rice, 81, former clerk of the courts of Adams county and first cashier of the Arendtsville national bank, was found dead at the rear of his Arendtsville home late Satruday afternoon. A heart attack was the cause of death.

Mr. Rice had been in his usual health during the day and about 4 o'lock in the afternoon he had walked from the house toward the rear of the property. About 15 minutes later his body was found by Mrs. Bernadette Eicholtz, his housekeeper.

Mr. Rice was born in Menallen township, February 2, 1855. He was educated in the public schools of the county and later attended an academy at East Berlin. For 17 years he taught in the public schools in rural Adams County. He owned and managed a fruit farm in Menallen township, near Brysonia.

The deceased had served Menallen township as assessor and from 1900 to 1904 he was clerk of the courts of the county. He was a democrat.

When the Arendtsville national bank was organized in 1908. Mr. Rice was elected cashier, a position he held until 1915 when he retired from active business and confined his activities to the management of his fruit farm. He served for a number of years as a member of the school board of Arendtsville borough.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church at Arendtsville.

His wife, the former Jane Hartman, died January 1 1931.

Surviving are three sons: Oscar C. Rice and Arthur E. Rice; Biglerville, and State Senator John S. Rice, West Broadway, and three grandchildren, Oscar C. Rice, Jr., Arthur E. Rice, Jr. and Miss Jane Rice, all of Biglerville. There are two sisters, Mrs. Dora Wagner, Biglerville, and Mrs. Annie Hartman, Aspers.
