About Leila Belle Crowe

GEDCOM Note

Obituary:
Mrs. Leila Crowe Alleyn, aged 58, prominent resident of Sheffield, passed away Saturday evening at 11 o'clock at the Colbert County Hospital, following an illness extending over a long period.
Mrs. Alleyn, a talented woman, was from one of this sections oldest families, and was widely known for her work in religious, social and club affairs. Her many friends, while knowing that the end could not be far away, were deeply shocked and grieved at her passing. Funeral services, held before a large gathering of friends, were at the Grace Episcopal Church this morning at 11 o'clock, with Rev. W. A. Thompson, rector of trinity Episcopal Church, Florence, conducting final rites. Interment followed in Oakwood, cemetery, Sheffield, with Brown Service directing.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Charles J. Alleyn; a daughter, Mrs. Samuel Hammond, of West Orange, J. J., a sister, Mrs. Lon P. McFarland, of Lebanon, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Leila Alleyn Hammond and Mary Hammond, of West Orange, NJ, and five nephews. Active pallbearers were: W. T. Archer, J. L. Andrews, Dr. G. F. Littlepage, Capt. W. B. Hatch, M. S. Hansbrough and Clopper Almon.
Honorary pallbearers were: Judge J. H. Nathan, J. T. Kirk, Col. Americus Mirtchell, Judge Allen J. Roulhac, Dr. W. J. Maxwell, Robert Johnson, J. C. Harris, George Saywelf, Dr. John P. Long, W. H. Martin, Harvey Adams, Sam C. Cooke, Allison Drisdale, T. C. Sanfort, J. H. Nathan, Jr., and Dr. W. H. Blake
In the passing of Leila Crowe Alleyn, Sheffield has lost one of her representative women. Mrs. Alleyn came of a family whose history is interwoven with the history of our community and of the south. Her father, Major James R. Crowe, was a brave confederate soldier and one of the builders of our city. Her mother was of that unsurpassed type of woman hood, a Southern lady. The gallant young aviator, James Crowe, Junior, for whom the American Legion Post of Sheffield is names, was her brother.
Leila Crowe was the oldest of three lovely sisters who grew up in our midst. When scarcely more than a girl she married Charles Alleyn, son of an old New Orleans family of French descent. Like herself he belongs to the true noblesse of heart, mind, and sprit, and their only child a daughter, Isabel Alleyn Hammond, carries on the high traditions of her family.
Mrs. Alleyn was of a strong, vivid and lovable personality. Her buoyant and courageous spirit so dominated the ills and trials of life that the constant words on the lips of her friends during these last days have been: "We cannot associate death with her."
Her talents were versatile -- she was a gifted writer, a reader of unusual ability and a thinker of great originality. And in whatever she undertook as club member, social leader, church worker, citizen, she spent herself with generous enthusiasm.
But it was perhaps in little simple things that her character revealed itself most fully for, and there can be no higher praises than this, those who knew her best loved her most. Her neighbors are among her chief mourners.
Surviving Mrs. Alleyn are her husband, Charles J. Alleyn of Sheffield, a daughter, Mrs. Sam Hammond and two little grand-daughters of East Orange, New Jersey, a sister, Mrs. Lon McFarland of Lebanon, Tennessee, and five nephews.
