About Leila Belle Ray

Leila was the last in the chain of our branch of the Longfellows. Her brother Elsworth never married. She gave her first son, Harold the middle name the middle name Longfellow and as of this writing that tradition has been carried 3 generations further with the first son of each family being middle named Longfellow.

During World War II (with all the men gone to Military Duty) Leila, and her Daughter Vivian worked (building war ships) in the Kaiser Ship Yard in Providence, RI. They were among a group of women called "Rosie the Riveter" all of whom learned "quickly on-the-job" how to weld.

In the summer of 1942, with all of her children spread across the country involved in the military and war effort, Leila collected and cared for "all" of her grandchildren during the summer months at her summer home in Northfield, MA. providing a wonderful family experience in the middle of a very fearful war for each of them.
